Where is everyone?

While working with a student in one of our general education classrooms, I saw this awesome idea that one of my fellow teachers, Lauren R. has.  She found it on Pinterest. I tried to find the original idea to give them credit, and I couldn't find it... so if you know who came up with this.. Let me know!  I will be happy to give them credit for it!

I have so many students in and out of my room on a daily basis that when I saw this it immediately caught my eye.  Of course for all my students, I will need a huge board, but isn't this a cute idea?  All you need are some magnets, a cookie sheet, and a marker.

Do you use something in your classroom to track where students are?  If so, please share your ideas!

Let's Get Acquainted

I have been enjoying my first day of Winter Spring Break with 8 inches of snow outside by staying in and working on blog things.  I realized that I haven't shared a ton about me through my blogs, so I thought I would join up with Flying Into First Grade for her current linky party.

The Noun Game

Person
My favorite person would have to be my husband.  He has been so supportive of me when starting this blog last summer and helping me learn html and other aspects of this that I needed to know.  I really enjoy spending time with him.
We don't take a lot of pictures of ourselves, so here is a wedding one.
Place
I really like being at home, but I think my favorite place would have to be the beach!  I love going to the beach to relax.  I wish I was there now instead of in this snow.

Thing
My favorite thing would have to be my phone.  I cannot live without it.

Animal
I have many animals that I love, but I would have to say my 2 Shih Tzu dogs!  I have an almost 5 year old male named Kodak and a 10 month old female named Mia.

Leave me a comment and let me know what your favorite person, place, thing, and animals are. I would love to know.

Oh Peep!

Have you checked out Caitlin over at Learning Ahoy?? You need to!!

I had the amazing opportunity to try out one of her adorable activities called "OH PEEP!" with my students.  It reviews the first 100 sight words.  You want to see engagement????  You should have seen my students.  They loved it!  (Of course I don't have permission yet to post pictures of them, so you just see their hands... but I promise.. they loved it!)

I wasn't planning on doing it until this week, but I had it prepared last week because it was so cute that I couldn't wait to put it together.  And what do you know.. in walks my students in my Reading Group on Thursday... 1 was mad and 1 was hyper and not focusing well.  I immediately changed plans and pulled this activity out early.

Here are the directions to the game

There are many ways you can play this game.  There are adorable cards with 1 sight word on each.  I put all the cards into a bucket and had the students draw them out from there.  They had to read the word and if they got it right, they got to keep the card.

But.. there is a trick... there are cards in there that say "OH PEEP".  If you get this card, you have to put all your cards back in.  The goal is to have the most cards.. so be careful!

Watch out for the cards that say "Trade cards with another player".  During our game, a student had just counted their cards and was 4 cards ahead of the 2nd player.  As soon as he started telling everyone that, the 2nd place player drew this card and got to trade cards with him!!!  It was great.  They were such good sports about it too.  We had so much fun laughing and helping each other out.

You can also print 2 sets of these and play a matching game or use them as flash cards!

I used this game as a perfect opportunity to work on social skills such as taking turns, good sportsmanship, and providing compliments to others.  Whether you teach Social Skills or teach students that need practice on sight words... this is a great activity.

You can find this in her TPT store by clicking HERE and while you are there don't forget to check out her other products. Follow her blog by clicking on the button at the top of this post.  I am so glad I got the opportunity to check out this product and I am looking forward to more from her in the future!

Meet our class pets

This was posted on Tuesday but somehow disappeared from my blog so I am reposting.  Sorry!

We have the best and quietest class pets in my room.  They are so helpful with calming kids down.  Meet Uppa and Rachel:

These are weighted dogs that go around your neck or across your lap.  They can be heated up in the microwave also (but my students do not know that).  These are a great sensory tool to use with students.  We ordered them from Therapy Shoppe. My students will wear them during instruction time.  The pressure helps them calm and focus.  Also, they actually sit more still so Uppa or Rachel does not fall off their shoulders.  They know if they play with the dogs or the dogs fall off too much, the dog will have to go to someone else or back to its bed.

You may wonder how our dogs got their names...  best behavior contest!!!   The students were so well behaved when they knew they were working toward getting to name one of the dogs!  It was great!

Do you have class pets?  Real or not?
